· Flat Feet is a condition that is characterized by collapse of the foot’s natural arch. The severity varies from mild to advanced as do the symptoms one may present with. Typically, the condition presents itself during childhood and worsens as one ages. As this happens, tendons and ligaments stretch and may even tear. This can cause significant foot and ankle pain and even can cause the foot and ankle joints to develop arthritis. Many people with flat feet complain of fatigue and pain to the feet and ankles during prolonged standing and during activity. Flat feet may be either flexible or rigid. The arch height of flexible flat feet changes from the sitting to standing position whereas the arch height of rigid flat feet do not. Diagnosis is made by examination of the patient during non weight bearing position, observing their walking (gait) cycle and also by x-rays of the feet and ankles. Some people who have flat feet do not have pain, however a lack of pain does not mean that treatment should be overlooked. Most patients who have flat feet will develop some form of foot pain or problem if left untreated. The onset of the pain is generally dependant on the severity of the problem. Typically symptoms can progress from general foot fatigue to ongoing pain during ambulation. These symptoms are a result of tendonitis and/or tendon rupture and joint pain due to progressive arthritis resulting in cartilaginous loss within the joint.
